If you are celebrating your Birthday in December, you are SO lucky!
You have TWO gorgeous birthstones to choose from, Tanzanite and Blue Zircon.
Let's have a closer look at each one.
Tanzanite
Tanzanite is only mined in one place - Tanzania
Finest quality Tanzanite is an intense violet-blue colour
Tanzanite was introduced to the world by Tiffany & Co. and was heavily promoted as an exotic stone, it has since become one of their most popular coloured gemstones
Tanzanite Birthstone
Tanzanite is also known for the following traits:
brings the feeling of being “centred”
facilitates truthful thinking and communication
can help open your third eye and help with spiritual awakening
Blue Zircon
Zircon exists in a variety of colours including greenish-blue, yellow, brown and white (aka colourless)
The majority of zircon comes from Madagascar, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Vietnam and Australia. Zircon found in Australia is considered to be one of the oldest minerals on earth, estimated at 4.4 billions years old
Blue Zircon was very popular during Victorian Era and is often seen in estate jewellery
Is Zircon the same thing as Cubic Zirconia?
No.
People often confuse the two due to their similar sounding names.
Zircon is a natural stone found in nature.
Cubic Zirconia is a synthetic / lab created / man-made stone. It has completely different properties and is much less valuable.
Blue Zircon Birthstone
Blue Zircon is also known for the following traits:
brings stability and strength of mind
develops intuition
helps achieve one’s goals
Availability
Tanzanite and Blue Zircon are fairly abundant and are available in a large variety of shapes and sizes making them perfect for large statement pieces such as cocktail rings as well as smaller jewellery items.
Tanzanite and Blue Zircon are much more affordable than diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds, and alexandrite.
Many of my clients are pleasantly surprised by how affordable these gems really are.
Do you know what powers and qualities your birthstone holds?

Durability
In terms of hardness, Tanzanite scores a 6 - 7 out of 10 on Moh's scale.
Blue Zircon scores a 6.5 - 7 out of 10.
With sapphires and rubies at 9 and diamonds at 10, these can scratch your tanzanite or blue zircon if not stored properly or if they rub against each other.
Pro Tip: don't shy away from adding these unique gemstones to your collection, just be careful while wearing them
